🤝 AWS Shared Responsibility Model (for S3)
Security for S3 isn't handled by AWS alone — it's split between AWS and you:
☁️ AWS secures the cloud.
👤 You secure what you put in it.
AWS doesn't auto-configure every security setting for you — knowing where the line falls matters.
☁️ AWS Handles
🏗️ Infrastructure — servers, networking, storage systems, and data centers behind S3
💎 Durability & Availability — engineering S3 to survive facility-level failures without data loss
🔍 Internal Security — ongoing vulnerability scans, monitoring, and maintenance
📋 Compliance — keeping S3's infrastructure certified against industry/regulatory standards
👤 You Handle
🗂️ Versioning — AWS builds the feature, but you have to turn it on
📜 Bucket Policies — get these wrong and you risk exposing data publicly
✅ Data Verification — extra integrity checks are opt-in, not automatic
📊 Logging & Monitoring — optional, and yours to enable if you want visibility
💰 Storage Class Selection — picking what fits your workload/budget is on you
🔐 Encryption — S3 supports it, but choosing and configuring it is your job
TL;DR: AWS keeps the foundation solid and secure — but locking down your buckets (permissions, versioning, encryption, monitoring) is entirely on you. 🔑
