🚀 Advanced FastAPI Features — Project 3 Overview
Let’s dive into some more advanced FastAPI features as we move into Project 3.
In this project, we will shift our focus from BOOKS → TODOS, building a more realistic and production-ready application.
🎯 Project 3 Focus
Project 3 is designed to introduce real-world backend concepts that are essential for modern APIs.
This project will include the following key components:
🗄️ Full SQL Database Support
Our application will support three production-ready SQL databases:
SQLite – Lightweight and easy to use for development
PostgreSQL – A powerful, enterprise-grade relational database
MySQL – A widely adopted and scalable SQL database
This flexibility allows the same FastAPI application to run in different environments without changing the core logic.
🔐 Authentication (JWT)
We will implement authentication using JSON Web Tokens (JWT).
With JWT authentication:
Users will be able to create accounts
Each user will have a username and password
Tokens will be generated and validated to confirm identity
This ensures that only authenticated users can access protected endpoints.
🛂 Authorization (Roles & Permissions)
Beyond authentication, we will also implement authorization.
Authorization allows us to:
Assign roles to users (such as
adminoruser)Restrict access to certain API endpoints
Allow admins to access endpoints that regular users cannot
This adds an important layer of security and control to our application.
🔑 Password Hashing
When handling user credentials, security is critical.
Instead of storing plain-text passwords, we will:
Use a hashing algorithm
Hash passwords before saving them to the database
Ensure sensitive data is protected even if the database is compromised
Password hashing is a fundamental requirement for any secure authentication system.
🧱 Creating the TODO Table
To support our application, we will create new Todo table models.
These models will:
Represent the structure of our Todos table
Be used throughout the project to store and retrieve records
Integrate directly with FastAPI and our chosen database
🧩 Application Architecture Overview

From the architecture above, we can see how each part of the system communicates:
🌐 Webpage ↔ FastAPI
The frontend communicates with FastAPI
JWT tokens are used to verify authentication
FastAPI checks whether requests are authorized
⚙️ FastAPI ↔ Database
FastAPI retrieves users and Todos from the database
Incoming requests are validated against stored data
User identity and permissions are confirmed before processing requests
This structure ensures that data flows securely and reliably between the client, server, and database.
✅ Summary
In Project 3, we move beyond basic FastAPI usage and start building a production-ready backend.
We shift our focus to a Todo-based system, introduce full SQL database support, implement JWT-based authentication, enforce role-based authorization, and secure user credentials using password hashing.
Together, these features form the foundation of a scalable, secure, and real-world FastAPI application.
