π Amazon S3 Express One Zone
Amazon S3 Express One Zone is a high-performance but for a single Availability Zone.
So unlike other S3 storage classes, it stores data in only one Availability Zone (AZ) instead of multiple AZs.
Amazon S3 Express One Zone is designed for applications that require very fast access to data.
ποΈ Directory Buckets
S3 Express One Zone runs on a special bucket type β a Directory Bucket β which lives in one AZ that you choose, rather than being distributed like a standard bucket. That single-AZ design is exactly what unlocks the speed gains.

</div>β‘ Why It's Faster
When your app and your data sit in the same AZ, there's no cross-AZ travel time. That gets you:
π Hundreds of thousands of requests/second
β‘ Single-digit millisecond latency
π Up to 10Γ faster than S3 Standard
π° Up to 50% cheaper storage than S3 Standard
π Still highly durable (99.999999999%)
β οΈ But lower availability (99.5%)
π Lets you co-locate storage + compute in the same AZ to cut latency further
β οΈ The Trade-Off
Speed comes at a cost: since everything lives in one AZ, if that AZ goes down, you temporarily lose access to your data. It's a deliberate trade β performance over resilience β so it's best for workloads where speed matters more than multi-AZ redundancy.
