AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner / Amazon S3

S3 Overview

๐Ÿง What is Amazon S3?

Amazon S3 (Simple Storage Service) is one of AWS's core building blocks โ€” object storage that's advertised as "infinitely scalable."

๐Ÿ’ก Key idea: Store any amount of data, anytime, anywhere.

๐Ÿ–ผ๏ธ Structure: ๐Ÿชฃ Bucket โ†’ ๐Ÿ“„ Objects โ†’ ๐Ÿ”‘ Keys (paths)

Why S3 Matters

  • ๐ŸŒ Backbone of much of the internet

  • ๐Ÿ”— Powers many other AWS services

  • ๐Ÿ›ก๏ธ Built for high durability and scale

๐Ÿš€ Common Use Cases

Use Case

What It Means

๐Ÿ“ฆ Storage & Backup

Files, images, videos, database backups

๐Ÿ›ก๏ธ Disaster Recovery

Replicate data across regions

๐ŸงŠ Archival

Cheap long-term storage

๐ŸŒ Static Website Hosting

Host HTML/CSS/JS directly

๐Ÿ“Š Data Lakes & Analytics

Foundation for big data processing

๐Ÿ”„ Hybrid Cloud

Extend on-prem storage into the cloud

Real-world: ๐Ÿ“ˆ Nasdaq stores years of data on S3; ๐Ÿ–ง Cisco runs analytics on top of it.

๐Ÿชฃ Amazon S3 Buckets โ€” Top-Level Containers

A bucket is a container for objects. S3 allows people to store objects (files) in โ€œbucketsโ€

Key properties:

  • ๐ŸŒ Name must be globally unique

  • ๐Ÿ“ Created in a specific AWS region

โš ๏ธ Important nuance:

S3 looks global, but buckets are regional. There are actually two naming layers โ€” a globally unique namespace (no two accounts can share a name) and a regional namespace (the same name can be reused across different regions under certain conditions).

๐Ÿ“ Naming rules: 3โ€“63 characters, lowercase letters/numbers/hyphens only โ€” no uppercase, no underscores.

๐Ÿ“ฆ Amazon S3 Objects โ€” The Actual Files

An object is a file stored in a bucket.

๐Ÿ“ฆ Object = Data + Metadata + Key

๐Ÿ”‘ Object Keys โ€” The Full Path

The key is the full path to a file, e.g.:

s3://my-bucket/my-folder/another-folder/file.txt
  • Prefix: my-folder/another-folder/

  • Object name: file.txt

  • Key = Prefix + Object name

โš ๏ธ Important: S3 has no real folders โ€” what look like folders are just slashes inside the key name.

  • ๐Ÿ“ฆ Max object size: 5 TB

  • ๐Ÿ“ค For anything over 5 GB, use Multipart Upload (split the file into parts, upload separately)

  • ๐Ÿ“‘ Metadata: key-value pairs describing the object

  • ๐Ÿท๏ธ Tags: up to 10 per object, used for security rules and lifecycle policies

  • ๐Ÿ†” Version ID: appears only if versioning is enabled; lets you recover older versions

๐Ÿง  Quick Recap

  • ๐Ÿชฃ Bucket = container (regional)

  • ๐Ÿ“„ Object = file

  • ๐Ÿ”‘ Key = full path

  • ๐Ÿ“ "Folders" = an illusion created by key names

  • ๐ŸŒ Naming is global, but the bucket itself lives in one region

๐Ÿ”ฅ Common Exam Traps

  • โ— S3 is not truly global โ€” buckets are regional

  • โ— There are no real directories, only keys with slashes

  • โ— Files over 5 GB need Multipart Upload

๐Ÿ’ฅ Bottom line: S3 is scalable, secure, durable object storage โ€” and the foundation a lot of AWS is built on.
