Database Management System (DBMS) / Types of Databases

Object-Oriented Databases

An Object-Oriented Database Management System (OODBMS) stores data as objects, just like in object-oriented programming (OOP).

  • Instead of tables and rows, data is represented using classes, objects, and inheritance.

  • It blends database capabilities with object-oriented programming, allowing objects to be stored directly in the database without converting them into relational tables.

🧱 Structure

If you know OOP (like in Java, Python, or C++), think of it like this:

class Student:
    def __init__(self, id, name, courses):
        self.id = id
        self.name = name
        self.courses = courses

➡️ This whole object (including the courses list) is stored as-is in the database.

🎯 Key Concepts

Concept

Description

🔸 Object

A real-world entity with attributes and behavior (methods)

🔸 Class

Blueprint for objects

🔸 Inheritance

Allows a class to inherit from another

🔸 Encapsulation

Bundling data with methods

🔸 Persistence

Objects remain stored even after the program ends

✅ Advantages

Advantage

Description

🧠 Natural mapping

Objects in code = objects in database

🚀 No impedance mismatch

No need to convert objects into tables and back

🔁 Reusability

Inheritance and encapsulation supported

🔒 Complex data support

Easily handles multimedia, CAD, or complex data structures

📦 Rich data types

Can store arrays, nested objects, etc.

❌ Disadvantages

Disadvantage

Description

❌ Less popular

Fewer tools and community support compared to RDBMS

❌ Harder integration

Not as compatible with SQL-based reporting tools

❌ Learning curve

Especially for those not familiar with OOP

❌ Limited standardization

No universal query language like SQL

❌ Complex queries

Relationships harder to query compared to SQL joins

🧰 Examples of OODBMS
