Network Delay

🤔 What is Network Delay? (Basic Idea)

When you send data from one device to another:

  • It does not arrive instantly

  • It takes some time to travel

📌 This time taken by data to travel from sender to receiver is called network delay.

🧠 Simple Definition

📌 Network delay is the total time taken by a data packet to travel from the source to the destination across a network.

🧠 One-Line Understanding

Network delay = “How long does my data take to reach you?”

🧠 Real-Life Analogy

📦 Courier Delivery Example

  • You send a parcel today

  • It reaches after 2 days

👉 That 2-day time = delay

Similarly:

  • Packet sent now

  • Packet received later

👉 That time gap = network delay

🧭 Where Does Network Delay Occur?

Delay can occur at:

  • Sender

  • Routers

  • Links

  • Receiver

📌 Delay accumulates at every hop.

🧩 Components of Network Delay

Total network delay is made up of four main components:

🧠 1. Processing Delay

⚙️ What is Processing Delay?

📌 Time taken by a device (router or host) to:

  • Examine packet header

  • Check errors

  • Decide where to forward packet

🧠 Example

  • Router reads destination IP

  • Looks up routing table

📌 Usually very small (microseconds).

❌ When It Increases

  • Slow devices

  • Complex security checks

📦 2. Queuing Delay

🚦 What is Queuing Delay?

📌 Time a packet spends waiting in a queue before transmission.

🧠 Why Does It Happen?

  • Too many packets arrive at the same time

  • Link is busy

📌 Strongly related to congestion.

🧠 Example

  • Long queue at a toll booth 🚗🚗🚗

❗ Important Point

  • Can be 0 ms (no congestion)

  • Can be very large (heavy congestion)

📡 3. Transmission Delay

📤 What is Transmission Delay?

📌 Time required to push all bits of a packet onto the link.

🧮 Formula (Exam Gold ⭐)

TransmissionDelay= Packet Size / Link Bandwidth

🧠 Example

  • Packet size = 1,000 bits

  • Bandwidth = 1 Mbps

👉 Transmission delay = 1 ms

❗ Key Point

  • Depends on:

    • Packet size

    • Bandwidth

  • ❌ Does NOT depend on distance

🌍 4. Propagation Delay

🌊 What is Propagation Delay?

📌 Time taken for signal to travel through the medium from sender to receiver.

🧮 Formula (Exam Gold ⭐)

PropagationDelay= Distance / Propagation Speed

🧠 Example

  • Fiber optic cable

  • Long distance → higher delay

❗ Key Point

  • Depends on:

    • Distance

    • Medium type

  • ❌ Does NOT depend on packet size

📌 VERY IMPORTANT⭐

🧠 Delay vs Latency

📌 In most networking contexts:

  • Delay ≈ Latency

👉 Both mean time taken to deliver data.

🎯 Why Network Delay Matters

High delay causes:

  • Voice lag 📞

  • Video buffering 🎥

  • Online gaming issues 🎮

  • Poor user experience 😡

📌 Real-time applications are very delay-sensitive.

🛠️ How to Reduce Network Delay (Preview)

  • Increase bandwidth

  • Reduce congestion

  • Use faster routers

  • Optimize routing paths

  • Apply QoS

📌 These will be covered in upcoming topics.

🧠 Memory Tricks

  • P Q T P → Processing, Queuing, Transmission, Propagation

  • Queue = Congestion 🚗

  • Propagation = Distance 🌍

⭐ One-Line Summary

🔹 Network delay is the total time taken by a packet to reach its destination, caused by processing, queuing, transmission, and propagation delays.
