HuggingFace vs LangChain

You might not have this doubt right now — but at some point you will wonder: should I use HuggingFace or LangChain for this? This section clears that up early so it never slows you down later. In upcoming chapters, we'll go deeper into both technologies individually.

🤗 HuggingFace Transformers

❓What it is:

A model library and platform. It downloads open-weight models to your machine and runs inference locally.

✅ Use it when:

  • You want to run a model locally — free, private, no internet after download

  • You need to fine-tune a model on your own dataset

  • You're doing NLP tasks — classification, embeddings, translation, summarisation

  • You just need a single inference call, no app logic around it

  • Data privacy matters — nothing leaves your machine

🧐 What it does:

  • Downloads model weights to your disk (~/.cache/huggingface/)

  • Runs inference on your CPU/GPU

  • Hosts 400k+ open-weight models (Llama, Mistral, BERT, Whisper, etc.)

  • Supports fine-tuning via the Trainer API

  • Works with text, vision, audio, and embedding models

❌ What it does NOT do:

  • Does not give you GPT-4, Claude, or Gemini — closed models are only accessible via their own APIs

  • Does not manage conversation memory or history

  • Does not connect models to tools, search, or databases

  • Does not build agents or pipelines — it just runs the model

🧠 Mental model: HuggingFace is like an app store for models. Once downloaded, the model lives on your disk and runs entirely on your machine. Their servers are done after the download.

⛓️‍💥 LangChain

❓What it is:

An orchestration framework. It builds application logic around any model — memory, tools, retrieval, agents. It has no model of its own.

✅ Use it when:

  • You need the model to remember past messages (conversation memory)

  • You want Q&A over your own documents (RAG pipeline)

  • You want the model to use tools — web search, calculator, database queries

  • You're building an agent that decides what to do autonomously

  • You want to swap models later (GPT-4 → Claude) without rewriting your app

🧐 What it does:

  • Manages conversation history and injects it into each prompt

  • Fetches relevant documents and stuffs them into the prompt (RAG)

  • Handles tool use and function calling

  • Runs agent reasoning loops

  • Works with any model backend — OpenAI, Anthropic, HuggingFace, Ollama

❌ What it does NOT do:

  • Does not include any model — it has no intelligence of its own

  • Does not run inference — it just builds and sends prompts

  • Does not fine-tune or modify models

  • Does not store memory permanently — memory is per-session by default

🧠 Mental model: LangChain is a smart prompt builder. It collects history, fetches documents, formats tool results — then sends one well-structured prompt to whatever model you've plugged in. The model never knows LangChain exists.

🤝 When to use both together

LangChain handles the app logic (memory, RAG, tools) + HuggingFace/Ollama provides the model running locally.

Example use case: A private local chatbot with document Q&A — LangChain manages the pipeline, HuggingFace runs the model on your machine. No cloud, no API cost, no data leaving your system.

🚀 One-line decision rule

If your question is "which model should I run?" → HuggingFace
If your question is "how do I build something useful with a model?" → LangChain
